SOCIOECONOMIC DETERMINANTS OF AGRICULTURAL AND MINING SECTOR GROWTH IN RESOURCE-BASED REGIONS: EVIDENCE FROM BANGKA BELITUNG PROVINCE

Abstract
Regional economic growth in resource-dependent regions is often shaped by the performance of primary sectors, particularly agriculture and mining. Although these sectors contribute substantially to regional gross domestic product and employment in Bangka Belitung Province, the socioeconomic determinants of their growth have rarely been examined separately. This study investigates the effects of employment, education, working hours, gender composition, wages, health conditions, and gross fixed capital formation on the growth of the agricultural and mining sectors in Bangka Belitung Province. The study employs a quantitative approach using panel data regression for seven districts and municipalities over the period 2020–2024. The results show that agricultural sector growth is mainly associated with labor availability and health conditions, reflecting the continued importance of labor-based production dynamics. By contrast, mining sector growth exhibits a more complex pattern, with stronger relationships involving employment, workforce quality, health conditions, and formal wage dynamics. These findings indicate that the determinants of growth differ across sectors due to differences in production structure. Accordingly, regional development policies should adopt sector-specific strategies in order to promote more sustainable and inclusive economic growth in resource-based regional economies.
